This course focuses on the development of operas from the Baroque era to the present, exploring opera as a social and cultural phenomenon and an expression of national musical styles. It utilizes lectures and workshops to explore the history of opera in its many forms and discover the extent to which modern music—including popular musical theatre—is indebted to the success and popularity of opera.
