Writing Beyond Race
This “year of bell hooks” event focuses conversation on hooks’ most recent book, Writing Beyond Race, in which she uses a series of essays in critique of modern media from Precious and Crash to the biography of Malcolm X. Hooks discusses how readers, writers, activists, and scholars can be called to challenge domination and oppression and think critically about race, gender, and class. The discussion will be led by Billy Korinko ’09, former founding Director of SNC’s Men’s Initiative. Korinko is currently a lecturer and Ph.D. candidate in gender and women’s studies at the University of Kentucky.
